
The MFA Environmental Certification Programme is designed to recognise and record active participation in and agreement to the objectives of the MFA Environment Programme, including adherence to the Industry Standard Operating Procedures and Codes of Practice.
Criteria
The following criteria must be met in order to attain certification;
Vessels are required to be passed as compliant by the MFA Environmental Mentor or a representative of the MFA Environment and Compliance Committee. Vessel crews must demonstrate their knowledge and adherence to the industry Standard Operating Procedures and Codes of Practices
- Industry Standard Operating Procedures
- Noise Code of Practice
- Wainui Code of Practice
- Pollution and Emissions Code of Practice
- Reducing Waste taken to Landfill Code of Practice
Marine farms are required to be passed as compliant by a representative of the MFA Environment and Compliance Committee. Marine farms must comply with the industry Standard Operating Procedures.
In addition to the above criteria crews must be active participants in regular beach clean ups of their allocated areas, or as part of the rostered clean ups in Pelorus Sound, Port Underwood or Wanui Bay, and participate in the Big Day Out held in December each year which focuses on key areas throughout the Top of the South Island.
Maintaining Certification
Vessels and farms will be regularly monitored to ensure the above criteria continues to be met by each company and vessel. There is a robust monitoring programme and rules around any non-compliance which may result in the removal of their certification status.
